New Way continues to move Fearlessly Forward

SCRANTON, Iowa — The McLaughlin family today announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to sell Scranton Manufacturing Company Inc., d/b/a New Way Trucks and the New Way Trucks brand.

After more than half a century, the privately held, central Iowa-based company will now become part of Federal Signal Corporation (NYSE: FSS) (“Federal Signal”). Scranton Manufacturing and its New Way Trucks brand represent the largest privately held manufacturer of refuse equipment in North America. The company has operated in Scranton, Iowa since 1971, originally manufacturing agricultural equipment for local farmers. In 1984, the company transitioned to manufacturing refuse equipment with the acquisition of Des Moines, Iowa-based New Way Trucks. Since 1984, the company has grown to more than 750 employees across five factories in two states, with operations in Scranton and Carroll, Iowa and Booneville, Mississippi.

“This is not a decision we made lightly, said Mike McLaughlin, Chief Executive Officer. “As a family-owned business, this company has been part of our lives for nearly three generations. It has grown thanks to the hard work and dedication of our employees, distributors and partners, and their belief in what we do. They are the heart of this company, and we are deeply grateful for everything they have contributed. Together, we have built this company to be the largest privately held manufacturer of refuse equipment in North America.”

The acquisition will allow New Way to strengthen its position as an equipment manufacturer in the North American solid waste, recycling, and environmental services industry. Already a prominent manufacturer in the refuse space, New Way’s continued growth will be buoyed by the global resources of Federal Signal, as they broaden their footprint in the environmental services space.

“We are excited to join the Federal Signal family and add New Way to their portfolio,” continued McLaughlin. “It has always been important to my family that we provide for our employees, and partnering with Federal Signal allows for the very best opportunities for the entire New Way employee family. Our company’s culture has always been important to the success of the business and aligns perfectly with Federal Signal’s culture of growth, innovation, and teamwork.”

“The acquisition of New Way establishes a new vertical within our specialty vehicle portfolio and represents a meaningful expansion into the recession-resilient waste and recycling industry,” said Jennifer L. Sherman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Federal Signal. “With our deep expertise in selling refuse equipment through our direct distribution channel and our ability to leverage the power of our specialty vehicle platform, we see significant opportunities to capture synergies and accelerate New Way’s growth and margin trajectory in coming years. Importantly, we believe New Way’s leading U.S. position in automated side loaders and for municipal sales sets the foundation for continued outperformance within the refuse space. We are excited to welcome New Way’s dedicated team of more than 750 employees to the Federal Signal family.”

The transaction is expected to close before the end of the year, subject to regulatory approval and customary closing conditions.

New Way Moves Fearlessly Forward at Waste Expo 2025

SCRANTON, Iowa (April 29, 2025) — New Way Trucks is reintroducing itself at Waste Expo 2025. Look for an updated presence and a renewed promise in Booth #3637 on May 5-8 in Las Vegas, NV.

At the show, New Way will bring perspective on how they answer to haulers and bring them solutions when others can’t. Visitors to the booth will see key upgrades to its Sidewinder® Automated Side Loader and Mammoth® Front Loader. Plus, attendees can check out enhancements to the New Way ROTO-PAC® Automated Side Loader, a residential waste and organics collection powerhouse that will feature the proven Sidewinder arm, in Peterbilt Booth #2028.

“This isn’t a change in who we are. It’s a clearer expression of why we do what we do,” said Don Ross, Chief Sales Officer at New Way Trucks. “Every truck we build, every upgrade we make, and every conversation we have is rooted in one thing: providing haulers what they need so they can do their jobs more efficiently and operations run smoothly. We’re the same customer-first team, focused on solutions, service, and support—now with a fearless push forward”

In addition, New Way will support the Environmental Research & Education Foundation (EREF) and the National Waste and Recycling Association (NWRA), and share insights during a panel on zero-emissions collection — demonstrating its commitment to practical innovation and customer-first thinking.

Advancing the conversation on zero emissions refuse collection

New Way is leading a panel discussion on the future of zero-emission refuse vehicles, bringing together experts from PACCAR, Mack, and Recology to explore hydrogen and battery electric technologies side by side.

Moderated by Marc de Smidt, Senior Director of Engineering, and featuring Product Manager Tyler White as a key panelist, the session will provide data-backed insights from New Way’s recent hydrogen fuel cell trials and ongoing industry collaborations. Together, panelists will examine operational readiness, adoption challenges, and the evolving role of zero-emission solutions in refuse fleets.

Product enhancements that simply do more

The updated Sidewinder® Automated Side Loader is engineered to be stronger, faster, and easier to maintain:

  • Cycle times reduced by 20%, thanks to cylinder, hydraulic, and control system upgrades.
  • Smooth ride and seamless operation with our industry-leading, frame-mounted arm and proportional controls.
  • Simplified maintenance with more than 1,200 feet of wiring removed, plus simplified harnessing and hydraulic routing.
  • Streamlined control modules conveniently mounted at eye level for easy troubleshooting.
  • Smart diagnostics and intuitive in-cab keypads make the tech feel effortless, not overwhelming.

The Mammoth® Front Loader is built to handle tough commercial routes with greater durability and payload capability:

  • Reinforced for reliability in key wear areas and high-stress points to better absorb compaction forces, including the front of the body, hopper, and tailgate.
  • More options to fit your fleet’s specific needs like multiple canopy options, front-of-body or underbody hydraulic valves, and 8,000- or 10,000-lb arm lift capacities.
  • Designed for maximum performance with rugged, dependable single-piece forks, pack-on-the-go capabilities, and a large cleanout door for easy maintenance.

“These enhancements were driven directly by customer feedback,” said Eric Evans, chief product officer at New Way Trucks. “We didn’t just add features — we solved real problems, with simplicity and reliability in mind.”

Giving back and honoring excellence

New Way is proud to support the Environmental Research & Education Foundation (EREF) by donating a 8-cubic-yard Diamondback Rear Loader, mounted on an Isuzu NRR chassis with a Perkins cart tipper. The truck will be auctioned during the EREF Live Auction at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7, with proceeds supporting environmental research and education across the waste management industry.

As a sponsor of the 2025 National Waste and Recycling Association (NWRA) Awards Gala, New Way proudly supports the recognition of the individuals and teams who have built and keep the waste and recycling industry running every day, in every community across the country. These awards honor essential workers and innovators who continue to elevate the industry — values that align with New Way’s commitment to push Fearlessly Forward.
